Legacy COBOL Modernization & Intelligent Automation
Functional Topic & Business Objective
Legacy Application Modernization, Batch Processing Transformation, Automation, Quality Engineering, and AI-Assisted Legacy Documentation.
The primary objective was to modernize the legacy COBOL application landscape at Volkswagen Mexico while minimizing disruption to the existing enterprise batch-processing ecosystem.
The initiative transformed COBOL applications into Java/Spring Boot microservices, preserved batch workflows via REST bridges, automated script modifications, established automated testing, and recovered legacy documentation using AI.
Industry
| Client | Automotive & Manufacturing |
|---|---|
| Engagement Type | Enterprise Legacy Application Modernization & Automation |
| Business Context | Business-critical batch applications on Dell Linux interacting with shell scripts, C++ programs, Syncsort, and mail-server integrations |
Problem Statement
The customer faced significant challenges with a legacy COBOL batch ecosystem running on Dell Linux:
- Tightly coupled shell-script orchestration invoking COBOL, Syncsort, C++, and mail processes
- Direct language conversion alone could not preserve batch invocation mechanisms
- Severe loss of legacy system knowledge due to missing or outdated documentation
- Need to eliminate legacy technical debt without risking core manufacturing batch operations
- Requirement to automate migration activities and ensure rigorous validation
The initiative required a holistic modernization approach spanning code transformation, REST integration, automation, and AI-powered knowledge recovery.
Our Role & Contribution
A 2-member team led the end-to-end modernization, integration, automated testing, and documentation activities over a 3-month engagement.
- Transformed 40 legacy COBOL programs into Java/Spring Boot applications using AWS Blu Age and Groovy batch triggers
- Engineered BARESTCON, a custom bridge utility allowing shell scripts to invoke modern applications via AWS Blu Age Gapwalk REST APIs
- Developed a Python automation framework to analyze and refactor 30 shell scripts to replace legacy COBOL calls with BARESTCON REST invocations
- Created a Python-based automated testing framework and delivered 40 automated test cases
- Applied AI-based source-code analysis to generate documentation for 160 legacy artifacts (40 COBOL, 90 shell scripts, 30 C++ programs)
Solution Overview
An incremental modernization architecture was introduced to bridge traditional shell-script orchestration with modern cloud-ready microservices.
High-Level Flow:
| Phase | Component | Role in Architecture |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Legacy Orchestration | Existing Shell Script |
Initiates and manages overall batch pipeline step sequence |
| 2. Integration Bridge | BARESTCON Utility |
Converts legacy local execution calls into outbound REST requests |
| 3. Communication Protocol | REST API |
Provides lightweight HTTP interaction between script and target app |
| 4. Modern Runtime | AWS Blu Age Gapwalk |
Routes batch requests and manages modernization lifecycle execution |
| 5. Execution Layer | Groovy Batch Trigger |
Handles runtime setup parameters and launches the microservice |
| 6. Modern Application | Java / Spring Boot App |
Executes business processing logic replacing legacy COBOL code |
- Shell scripts remain the primary batch orchestration mechanism with zero disruption
- Python-driven automated conversion replaced COBOL calls with REST invocations
- AWS Blu Age Gapwalk manages execution triggers for modernized Java services
- Full ecosystem compatibility preserved across Syncsort, C++, and mail server steps
